Once again Deep Blue Pirates teamed up with Guy’s Trust to celebrate World Oceans Day. This year a Global Garbage Grab was arranged in 13 different locations around the world including Indonesia, Dubai, South Africa and California. The aim of the day was to help clean up the worlds beaches, raise awareness of the work that Guy’s Trust is doing globally and raise money for Guy’s Trust Manta Watch Project.
We decided to clean up Whitley Bay beach close to the Rendezvous Cafe; although we are very lucky to have almost immaculate beaches in the north east we were surprised at how much litter we managed to find! Plastic items were by far the most common find but we also found part of a traffic cone, shoe insoles and broken tennis balls.
After a good search for litter along the northern stretch of the beach we headed back to the Cap’n for a BBQ and cakes! Dressed in our onesies, with the pirate flag flying, for some reason we attracted quite a lot of attention! Many passersby congratulated us on our good work as well as our outfits! All in all we raised £120 which will go towards the funding of an internship in the Manta Watch Project in Indonesia.
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, helped collect litter and donated to this amazing cause. Keep an eye out for next years World Oceans Day event!
